10 tips for calming nerves

Giving a speech at a wedding is one of the most stressful times in someone’s life.  Giving a speech can be enjoyable and you can give the best speech of your life by following the 10 tips below.  For more information, contact the Wedding Speech Specialists to ensure that you are able to do your best and be the most memorable part of the formalities at a wedding.

10. Visualise yourself successfully having given your speech and the feeling of relief and happiness you feel as you proudly sit down while everyone claps and claps, encouraging you more than you ever imagined.

9. Practice.  Practice.  Practice.  Nothing can beat it.  You need to allow enough time to write your speech (or ask the Wedding Speech Specialists to write it for you) and then practice the delivery of your speech.

8. Venue – know the room layout, the use of lectern and/or microphones.  If possible, set aside some time before the wedding ceremony to stand on the stage and imagine what it would be like to speak in front of the bridal party and guests.

7. Prepare. Give yourself enough time to ensure that you have a well written speech and include all the important people that you must thank during your speech.  Writing your speech the night before doesn’t usually work out well!

6. Guests.  You must know how many people are going to be in the room, are there special people who have travelled far or is there someone significant who you need to mention.  Know your audience to ensure your content is appropriate.

5. Exercise.  Moving your body and eating well in the few days before the wedding ensures that your ability to recall information is high.  Moving/stretching/yoga can help alleviate nervous stress and tension before giving a speech.

4. Stand tall.  Opening up your body and giving yourself a strong stance, with feet grounded to the floor can really improve your state.  You will be telling your body that you are alert and ready to give it your best.

3. Memorise.  Learn at least the first sentence of your speech.  This allows you to engage with your audience with eye contact and body language.  Those first few moments really count when giving a speech and your audience with thank you.

2. Smile.  Start greeting your audience with a smile.  It takes significantly less facial muscles to smile (than to frown) and smiling uplifts your spirit.  It is likely that you will put yourself and your audience at ease by smiling before you start.

1.  The number 1 tip that is so important to remember – is to be yourself.  The authenticity of being true to yourself and putting in place the other 9 tips above, is the key to your wedding speech success.
